Quaderns d'avaluació. 39

Issue 39 of the collection Quaderns d’avaluació gathers two articles that are the synthesis of the results of two international assessments, promoted by the IEA: PIRLS 2016 and TIMSS 2015. Reading (PIRLS) and mathematics and sciences (TIMSS) are fundamental areas in the development of students, both in academic life and in social and civic life. For the first time, Catalonia participates in the two international studies with an expanded sample.

The first article of the number is devoted to PIRLS, which evaluates the performance in reading of the students enrolled in the fourth year of primary education. It is conducted in cycles of five years (2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016), in which more and more countries participate, with the intention of obtaining data that can be internationally equivalent. In PIRLS 2016, more than fifty countries and territories participate. Seven autonomous communities in Spain have also expanded the sample to obtain representative data of their territory.

The second article presents the synthesis of the results of TIMSS 2015, which provides educational and contextual performance data in mathematics and science in students enrolled in the fourth year of primary and in the second year of secondary education in more than sixty countries and territories. The assessment study is conducted every four years since 1995. Catalonia participates in 2015 with an expanded sample and only with students in the fourth year of primary education. Five autonomous communities have also expanded the sample.
